The ROUGH RIDERS was a volunteer regiment formed for the U.S. Army, and quickly joined by future President and then Assistant Secretary of the Navy Theodore Roosevelt during the war of 1898 - the Spanish-American War. While at first intended as a unit formed of men from the Southwest, once Roosevelt joined up the group soon had members from all of the country.

They trained at San Antonio, Texas, under the able leadership of Col. Leonard Wood. In May, 1898, equipped with the Krag .70-30 bolt action magazine rifle, the Rough Riders went by train to Tampa, Florida. They they camped briefly before embarking for Cuba.

In Cuba, as part of the U.S. Army's Fifth Corps, the Rough Riders participated in a very famous action at San Juan Hill. The reporter sending wire stories back to William Randolph Hearst in New York was the famed Civil War novelist Stephen Crane.

You can learn ALL you want by using the PROPER spelling of the name in a web search. There have been some wonderful films and television programs about them, and in Tampa is a large and dedicated group of re-enactors.
