I would like to buy a DVD / CD burner which can be hooked up via USB externaly. Please suggest a good brand considering speed , performance and data reliability. I plan on using it for everyday media burning/copying, also want to back up my Laptop once in a while. Thanks for you advices.

heres what i use all for less than 80 bucks

You can get an NEC DVD 16X DL Burner at Newegg.com for 35-45 bucks. Next get a USB 2.0 Hard Drive Enclosure, but make sure it will handle CD/DVD drives. (mine cost 40 bucks)

Now you have a portable media burner that will burn DVD's and CD's.

Also If you go this rout, set the jumper on the back of the DVD burner to MASTER.
