The main issues I see are that:
- Society does not respect mens' ability to raise children -- parenting is still seen to be a job that requires a mother's involvement, which is unfair to competent stay-at-home and single dads. Some companies reflect this disparity by offering only limited parental leave for fathers, and far more paid parental leave for mothers (this is different to maternity leave).
- Maternity leave (up to 1 year of unpaid leave after which the mother will return to work) can negatively impact the team or company that the mother usually works for. This is because, after up to a year of absence, her old position (or a comparable one) must be made available to her -- even if she is taking up the same position she held before, it will often be necessary to retrain her in order to familiarise her with new processes, and refresh her understanding of existing processes.
This can put considerable strain on a small team or company, and impact her ability to perform her job role.

On my block, all the women are working and many of the men stay at home. This is because they are in their 40's and 50's. The men are on disability from working nonstop all those years in tough jobs, or the younger ones are laid off because their high tech, high paying jobs are outsourced. In America today, only the lower paid workers, usually the women, have the more secure jobs. It's the new reality, so we are all ok with women working, and men staying home. We all wish we could win the lottery, so no one would have to work, but this is the way it is, and its not even controversial anymore.

Sometimes it is more economical for who ever earns the most money to stay home with the kids. Right now we are in the position for my husband to work. I stay with the kids. When I get done with school that may change. However, since my kids are of school age, if I do go back to work then it will mean some extra money for us. Right now I stay home and attend school. I need my degree to better myself and gain an education.

I still don't think it is really accepted to the point that it should be. Subconsciously we all have biases, and I feel this is one that we have as a culture/society. I grew up in this kind of setting and have no problem with it, but I think we need to open our minds up! Ideally, I think both parents should work part time and be home part time. That's what my boyfriend and I plan on doing once we are married and have children.

Most people just care about what your house looks like, what clothes you wear and how small your cell phone is. That's why it's becoming more and more common to see both parents working, not just one.
I do know two couples where the woman works and the man stays home. In one case I think it's acceptable, because her job paid double what his did when they got married. In the second the woman works because the man refuses to and I think that's a shame.

i think it is a little more accepted but not completely. some people still feel that the man should be the provider so being a stay-at-home dad makes him less of a man

It's what women wanted - reap as ye would sew. It works out lovely for me and my wife. In the end she was so envious she has now started to work from home and its turned out well.
