- Good housing with lots of room, hiding spaces, and places to climb and explore.
- Good temps with a nice hot spot, general warmth, and cooler places to choose from.
- Has easy access to water for drinking and soaking.
- Good lighting that simulates the sun- starts and ends dim, runs a good 12 hours, includes all the colors, has infrared and UV-B in good ratios, AND has shady places in the cage.
- Good diet that is heavy in 'fodder' (grasses, hays, etc.) and designed for the species (see http://www.petdoc.ws/TortDiet.html for more ideas)
- Is kept outside whenever possible and safe. Outdoor tortoises are almost always better off. Grazing in a well-planted garden is heaven for a tortoise!
- Has a cage mate. Tortoises are solitary animals, but seem to appreciate company as long as there is a lot of room for all of them. Some tortoises even bond with other kinds of animals.
- Is not stressed by handling, noises/vibrations near the cage, predators hanging around, etc.
In other words- provide the right care!

Do not listen to the person who said "set it free" that is very dangerous. First of all your tortoise would not know how to fend for itself and may have problems finding food on it's own since it is used to being taken care of by you. and Secondly, once a turlte is in captivity it cannot be released into the wild. YOu can do more research but they carry a disease or bacteria that is fatal to the wild tortoise. Also I highly doubt you live in an area that is of natural habitat of the tortoise in which you are keeping.
In order to get a better answer, at least from me, I need to know what you are doing? What is he eating? What kind of habitat is he in (indoor or outdoor)? Do you allow him to hibernate? Is he alone or in a group? Has it mated/laid eggs? If you need more help email me.

Make sure it has water around.. that it can get into.. and also some good, fresh greens that he can nibble on.. and, of course.. shade so he does not have to be out ini the sun.

make sure it has plenty of places to hide, also if you can give it lots of leaves they like to hide in them. Also they like bread soaked in milk, and ts good for them in the summer.
