Hi,
Can anyone tell me what the average starting salary is for a teacher, as well as the area (state) you live in (because I know it will vary based on cost of living)? Thanks!

The national average for starting teach salaries is about $29,500.

I live in New Mexico.

If you are fresh out of your 4-year degree, with no prior experience, starting salary in NM is $30,000.

I started with a Master's degree four years ago, and was given an additional $650 for the advanced degree (gross pay $30,650).

Because cost of living is so low here, $30,000 (gross) actually goes quite a bit farther in New Mexico, especially in rural areas. My husband and I are both teachers, and live very comfortably with two teacher salaries (especially now that both kids are in public school themselves so we don't need daycare except on in-service and parent-teacher conference days), including renting a 3-bedroom home in a nicer neighborhood (we're saving to buy our own property).

When you calculate how much your take-home pay is, remember that you're not only dealing with taxes and insurance deductions... you also have professional dues, your state's mandatory retirement fund, etc.

Try looking at the site www.salary.com - you can select different areas, living and profession. Good Luck!!

Depends on where you live. Beware of salary.com - the figures are very often wildly exaggerated.
