I've worked on a good many of my friends' Accords over the years, doing exhausts, brakes, clutches, timing belts and that sort of thing. While I can remember the very early ones 1978-79 not being very good cars, and prone in particular to rust, I have a much more favorable opinion of the Accords I have seen in the past fifteen years or so. They are well designed and well built. The parts are formidable and over-engineered so that major components rarely fail. They are also put together logically, and generally are a pleasure to work on.
I work on a good many types of cars, considering I am an amateur backyard mechanic, including Mercedes, Jaguar, VW, Porsche, Lincoln, Ford, Subaru, Cadillac, Chevy, Nissan, Chrysler, Alpha Romeo (ok I was crazy when I bought that one), and once even a friend's Ferrari (helped do a clutch in that one just for the lifelong bragging rights and I am still milking it 20 years later). Every manufacturer has some things they do elegantly that cause you to just sit back and admire them when you are taking their car apart--Honda has more than its share of those sorts of things, and the Accord is really quite a good car. I would not worry in the least about it.

I guess that would have been a good thing to do before buying the car. I haven't heard too much bad about those cars, since the reliability of them seems to be pretty good universally, but reliability isn't everything. If there are some other problems with them, it wouldn't surprise me.

All Accords are among the most reliable cars on the road. Not sure what you've read, or where, but look at Consumer Reports or Car & Driver (or edmunds.com) and you'll see the rave reviews.
Good Luck.
