when copying from excel: paste special and then paste the file as a windows metafile
when copying from another powerpoint slide: select all on the slide you want to copy and then go to the slide you want to copy to and paste.
Titles to the left side: On the tool bar there should be a text box tool. Click on that and create a text box on the left side of the slide. If you need to change the orientation of the text, select the text, right click, go to properties, got to alignment and change the position of the text.

You can either copy & paste into an empty file, or you can do a save as and rename it. This will result in 2 same ppt files: one is the old one and the second is the new one. You can make any changes you want to the second one without affecting the first one, adn when you get ready to present, just hit the slideshow button on the lower left hand side of the window.

Cut and paste is the preferred method of choice. You mention that you have EXCEL formatted slides. I would suggest doing a screen shot of these (then you can resize to fit your frames), and then importing the images into your new hybrid ppt presentation. As for naming the slides, they are automatically numbered, however, you can just use the title of each slide.

Yep, open up the one you want to copy from. Copy the slides you want, open up the one you want them to go to. Paste them in and move them to where you want them.
