If I delay the trip there is a penalty. If I cancel I lose $1500.

Hey there, I would go ahead and go if your govt. says it is okay to travel over there. If it isn't okay, you should get your money back. My relatives went over to Iraq right after the war started, and they said that if there hadn't been televisions in the restaurants, that they wouldn't have even known there was a war going on. Just be careful! =) Buy travel insurance!

Jordan might be relatively safe. But "relatively" is the key word. In itself it is not a hotspot. But it is definitely in the middle of all the other hotspots.

I'd definitely cancel if the trip involved Lebanon, Israel or Syria. A trip to Jordan is, for the time being, probably doable.
