These originally were universities formed in the Victorian era in industrial cities like Birmingham, Manchester and Liverpool; snobs use it to refer to all universities that aren't Oxford or Cambridge.

It refers to all the older universities that are usually the main university It will also usually be a city university because all the redbrick university were the first to be introduced e.g. University of Birmingham, University of Leicester, University of Nottingham
