Once upon a time a professor of mine, while discussing a character in a book we were reading who feel upon misfortune, remarked: "Fair, who said life is fair?' Do you agree with his point of view, or disagree? Give an example only if you want to. Thank you.

These answers are meaningful, and very existentially based (which means we all are ultimately responsible for our outcomes regardless of how we are dealt.) Since I am not an existensialist, I'll let those who are answer the question.

No one has ever said life is fair
But I think it is most of the time. If you have joy, you have sorrow. If you have good times, you also have bad times. How else would you know the difference? If everything were always happy, and everything were always good. What kind of existence would that be?
There are always consequences for creating joy and creating sorrow... When you do something good for someone, they will like you. When you do something bad, you will not be respected or liked.
Random things like Cancer, accidents, disease, are not sorrowful in and of itself. It's HOW you deal with these obstacles in your life that makes life fair or not.

Well, lets see. I'm 26, have already almost died and as a result I have scars literally head to toe, and I was diagnosed with M.S. 3 years ago. I live a good life and have been in the helping fields (nursinghomes, people with disabilities, rape victims, etc) since I was 15. So I'm going to go with no, life hasn't really been fair, and karma has not been accurate. I agree with his point of view. Life isn't about being fair. It's about how you handle the crap that is tossed your way, and what you do in the meantime.

Fairness is a concept that has nothing to do with life. Life is what it is and is neither fair nor unfair. We as a society have come to expect things to be a certain way and say it is unfair when they are not what we thought. Life has no guarentees at all, you might reap what you sow and then again you just might not, not in this life anyway. What is fair about war or poverty or any other ills that plague this world. No deary life is not fair and was never intended to be. Life might be Heaven and it might be Hell and it could be just one of God's dreams and it could be a lot of things, but it is not now and never has been, fair

No, but life being unfair builds character. You persevere, take what you've learned and keep on keeping on!
I got cancer... no family history... none of the statistics fit, but it didn't change the diagnosis. I learned how strong I really am, a great deal about the medical profession (some good, some bad) and making health choices... I met some amazing people and I learned that I am more than the sum of my parts.

No one ever SAID life was fair. :) It is what it is. You play the cards you were dealt, and make the best of the situation that you can. Does it always work out in your favor? NO. Rarely does it ever.
But you keep on trying. Cause it's the RIGHT thing to do.

Life is obviously not fair. Bad things happen to good people all the time! But like Dad always said,"Who said life was fair!"

Karma. I believe in it firmly. However, I also believe it is in human nature to focus on the negative and make light of the good. Besides many people are drama queens that actually have some secret pleasure in focusing on the negative in their lives.

There is no such thing as fair. Life is life, and we experience things based on our decisions, not on some concept of fair

Fair is not a law of the universe. It is a man-made rule, that is often bent and more often broken.
