We had a really bad thunder and lightening storm the other night and since then none of the usb ports work, i have tried different devices in different ports and nothing works. The rest of the computer works and the mouse does work in another computer. The computer states that the usb is working correctly. Was just wondering if maybe the lightening might have messed up the usb ports and nothing else. Can someone help me, please? And what can I do to fix it? I have tried all kinds of things.

Yes it could be that only your USB ports are affected. In fact its a good bet that you had a spike in one of the USB devices attached and that fried it.

You can get a USB card to plug into an available PCI slot for about US $20 at Best Buy.

That should solve the problem.

Sure can. If lightning travelled through another device and into your PC through the USB port it could fry a chip in the USB controller. HOWEVER many USB controllers have circuit breakers in them that can trip from a surge. To reset them completely turn off and unplug your PC for a minute or two and restart it.

Lightning is a nasty thing - it can fry things very unexpectedly.

Try plugging in a mouse or thumb drive in and see if you get any response (even that two-note tone that XP plays)
