The hard drives and a good laptop comuter will cut off after a certain amount of time as long as you setup power management properly. The CPU and other devices will go into a (sleep) mode while it is ideling. Even when it's in the OS. You also have the option to put it into hibernation mod which cuts the laptop completely off but when you turn it back on it's up. However, if you want to be using the laptop consistantley without turning off the whole day that should be ok. However, It will severly lower the life expectency for laptops are not designed like desktops. Heat will be the major killer her.

If you go to walmart they sell this cooling pad that goes underneath your laptop it cools the bottom (part that gets hottest) where your batter and hard drives sit.

Most modern computers monitor their own system core and CPU temperatures, and are designed to automatically shut down or reboot if the core temperature gets too high.

However, there have been several cases where laptops or their power supplies have overheated and sometimes even melted carpet and started fires. Usually, if a laptop generates enough heat to damage its own components, it will start damaging stuff around it too. For this reason, you should avoid leaving your laptop switched on or charging while it is unattended, and avoid covering the laptop or power supply (as this will allow heat to build up more).

Please also be aware that some laptops are no longer called laptops; the manufacturers prefer to call them notebooks. Some people have theorised that this is because these computers are too hot to safely use on your lap.

Make a cooling unit. I did for mine, and it works fine. I made a platform (roughly 2 inches in height with feet), and mounted several hi-speed cooling fans to pull air downwards. When operating, it sucks all the heat out of my laptop and blows it out the back of the box. Overall, my machine runs about 10 degrees cooler. I have plans for a modified a/c unit, but it would have to be built into the desk to fit.

Hurt it?? lol, i think you mean damage it. As long as the fans are working normally, temperatures shouldn't cause any damage. After about 10-15 minutes of use, it isn't going to get any hotter no matter how long you leave it on, don't leave it with the screen down though.

my laptop runs ubuntu linux and it keeps running for around 10 hours a day. although on one occasion the xserver crashed thus leaving me with the console. if linux cant run on a laptop for a long while, do not dare to experiment with windows (windblows :) ).
