I know this question has been asked before, but I would like to express my own opinion and make a few, shall we say, suggestions...

Prostitution is one of the oldest professions in the world and no matter what the government and society at large tries to do about it, it's not likely to ever just go away. Knowing that, wouldn't it be better to just legalize and regulate it?

Prostitution is dangerous. Well, so is driving a car. There are many other professions that are dangerous, but these are regulated and have safety measures. Why not license prostitutes? If someone were to prostitute without a license, then it would be against the law. Also require 6-month check-ups for STDs. Go a certain amount past the check-up time and the consequences could be, say, a fine.

It's immoral. In today's society, that's the moral opinion. It has been an accepted profession in cultures historically. Our tax dollars and the resources of our police forces should be spent on more serious crimes

In response to some answers:

Dano: That prostitution will break apart marriages and families - if a man wants to have sex outside of his marriage, he's going to do it. That is the fault of the man, not the prostitute. Legalizing prostitution... yes it would mean more men would seek those services, but you're placing blame on the wrong end my friend.

Lodiju: Who says prostitution was started by men? Find me historical fact of this, huh? And even if it were true, most prostitutes choose the profession, they are not forced so your argument is moot.

Addendum to my previous comment:

That most prostitutes choose the profession and are not forced... that is to say that they are not forced by men. I apologize if anyone mis-interpreted. There are forces that would drive one to prostitution, and anyone should know it's generally not for love of it.

Yes, prostitution should be legalized. Who is the victim? The girl who takes the money? The guy who gives her money? If a girl decides she wants to earn money like this, that's her business. Why should I say she needs to work hard physical labor instead for a fraction of the earnings? If she doesn't want to, nobody is making her (at least not if everything is legal and above-board). So, is the guy the victim? There are a million reasons guys go to women like this, just a few are: no commitment, learning from a pro, thrill of something unusual, want to try something their current relationship won't give them, etc. None of those reasons seem to make the guy a victim either. And I don't believe in victimless crime.

If I wanted to sue someone for something. I would have to show damages. I would have to show that they harmed me in some way. Why is the criminal law different? Why, if you can't even sue someone civilly for something, can you call them a criminal instead? It makes no sense.

And lastly, I, for one, find -nothing- morally repugnant about prostitution. Not in the slightest. So arguments that it's morally wrong seem pathetic to me. Whose morals? Why should I be bound by someone else's moral code (which is just a fancy way of saying their opinion)? The presence of a victim is the only permanent, timeless measure of a what is a crime. Without a victim, it's just one person legislating their opinion over others. And -that- I happen to find immoral.

Voice of experience talking----
Many of the people who are forced into this by life have no money to apply for a license, as we all know the government would tack an unholy fee onto this. So just about anyone who really needed to do such a thing would not be able to get the license and would end up doing it illegally anyway.
I think it's a great idea as long as obtaining the license and testing are free. Otherwise you defeat the purpose.
And for those guys who think it's fun, this is not an easy life. Treat these people with some respect, as it might be the only time it's received. People who do this generally do so to get out of a bad situation, are already so beaten down that you would never believe, and die a little inside each time they do this. Calling them hoe's and other foul names just digs the knife a little deeper into these ladies and men's hearts!!

Murder has been accepted in some cultures historically, too, but the difference between humans and animals is that we learn from our mistakes. That being said, I do see your point. Prostitution is legal in some places, already, so if you want to be a prostitute or be a customer of one, you can always move to/visit one of these places and do your thing. If you don't want either of these things, then it would appear that you don't have anything to complain about. The reason it is illegal in most places is because most people choose to live in a place that does not allow this behavior. Same reason why it IS legal in other places. You just need to make your choice.

No, it should not.

License prostitutes, you mean like a realtor? Sorry, I'm not buying your reasoning.

You say that prostitution has been an "accepted" profession historically; who accepted it? To be accepted would mean that you would be free to go about doing it without it being illegal.

Prostitution was set up by men, for men, to the degredation of women, or in some cases men.

You got a really good point, I'm not saying you should be a prostitute but this way it would control the danger of STD's and maybe the ages of prostitutes! It would give people the choice of prostitution with a lower risk! It would also protect the people who hire the prostitutes.

Prostitution is legal here in Europe. There are hardly any problems either when it comes to prositution either. We have brothels, and have the ladies checked monthly for STDs.

In America, I think we are to quasi conservative. People worry that it puts the girls in dangerous situations, but who are we to think for these girls, if they want to sell themselves for money, let them.

Build a brothel on the outskirts of town, charge them rent, and so on. Make it a business and life will be grand

Yes, woman do not need to be in danger like that. Immoral, not at all!! It's a service that a woman provides. Sex is part of life and this will continue to be a service that men will need...

No, today cheap men & women are everywhere. Prostitution was for a time that morals existed. Try to find 100 virgins - female or male - unfortanuately it gets harder to find them all the time. If you want a quick roll in hay, any bar will find you one.
Supply & demand - no demand.

Yes. If it were legalized, it wouldn't be as unsafe as it is now. There would be mandatory STD screenings, and there would be a drop in secondary crimes associated with prostitution. Also, if this victimless crime were legalized, there could be areas/counties that it is sanctioned in & others where it would still be illegal.

Yes it should be legal. That way when I want a romp I can get it and cheeper than going out to try to find a gilr that gives out and having to woo her. Just take the money and spread the legs
