Most sales people working on commission that I have ever dealt with have really just been damn good liars.

Necessary product and communication skills? Your communication skills should be stellar, not "necessary". Remember, YOU're the one trying to sell the product - the product doesn't sell itself. Yes, you need passion and a positive attitude, but it's a mixture of those, along will personality, that makes a great salesman.
You may have a great attitude, but you might also not care at all about the product. Will you sell it then? No. Conversely, you may love a product, but be having a rotten day. I'll guarantee you'll have poor sales that day.
Sales isn't about having one good personality trait, but several.

As a former 'cold caller' myself, I can say with certainty that "passion" is not at all required. Sales is a job about determining a person's need, then helping them fill it - no passion required.
There is a reason that 80% of all sales are achieved by only 20% of the sales force - they are developing their skills in mastering human nature, and not worrying about such buzzwords as "passion" - we'll save that for the social workers.

Yes, you do need a positive attitude. I would say you need passion AND persistence. Many of the places you call or people you meet will not be that interested..so you have to excited and know your product exceptionally well to spark their interest. I worked briefly for in person sales..and you also have to be personable.

You need both. IF you don't have the passion for what you do, then you won't enjoy it or like it. You should be happy with your job , and like it. If you have passion it is a lot easier to have a positive attitude. You always need a positive attitude to succeed.

Both - but also Knowledge of the product you're selling, and more importantly, the negatives of the product you are selling. Today's consumers are looking for the HONESTY that existed during the 50's and 60's .

To succeed in sales you need to sell a high amount of the product/service of which you are trying to sell.
