A handshake is a short ritual in which two people grasp their right or left hands, often accompanied by a brief shake of the grasped hands. It is commonly done upon meeting, departing, offering congratulations, or completing an agreement. Its purpose is to demonstrate good will, and possibly originated as a gesture showing that the hand holds no weapon. Men are more likely to shake hands than women, however in business situations it is considered the standard greeting for both sexes.

Some cultures kiss on the side of the face...some bow in greeting others, etc.
Shaking hands comes from old times- as others have said, it was to show your companion that you were unarmed. During the middle ages, however, they didn't shake hands, since germs and the plague were so prevalent in those times. Instead, they 'shook' hands at the wrists.

It is a way of greeting in this culture, a way to acknowledge that we kno each other or just meeting each other for the first time. In my culture, we dont shake hands except in business.

this is a way to connect to a person, to really feel the other person, animals do things like this, they smell each other and stuff like that, but the important thing is connection.
