So, what does Yahoo Answers have to do with the American Education System?

What do you know about the process it takes to become a teacher?
Have you taught before? Do you have an education degree from an institution of higher learning?

A lot of factors should be considered when we think of how the education system is failing. Some are poorly trained teachers, some are overburdened school systems (working to fulfill federal regulations), some are overburdened tax payers, the list goes on.

When I read the questions on Yahoo Answers, I am surprised at the poor spelling and grammar, too. I think some of this comes from laziness (not wanting to look up words in a dictionary), poor typing skills, and a desire to get as many questions and answers out on the net to get more points. There is also this "thrill" of seeing the answers come back- kind of like a power trip so to speak.

I wouldn't make a sweeping judgment on the education system based on this.

I blame it on the lack of discipline that Americans seem to have. I do agree that the American education system isn't up to par as other nations, but at the same time people could be more self-motivated to change this ya know?

Well, ignorant or not, people are entitled to their opinions even when they disagree with what you believe. As to whether they're a reflection of the education system, that's hard to tell. If someone doesn't bother to inform himself/herself it's their own fault. There's personal responsibility somewhere in there!

No, it's not the schools.

It's the overall culture. The schools are frantically scrambling to try to build motivation in students disaffected by media messages about silly, stupid teachers and school being a waste of time (watch a kids' channel for a day and you'll see it), combined with parents too busy or too disaffected themselves to be seriously involved in the upbrining of their children.

I totally agree with you.. I am from England and find some of the spelling and grammar from your fellow countrymen atrocious. I am so glad we educate our people to a decent standard here. Mind you with a President like yours to look up to, who can blame them!

God, I hope not!

Although after many years of not being in the classroom I decided to take some courses at my local university. I was surprised by what college students didn't know.

I doubt it as you get just as many in the U.K as in the U.S.A but you also get you people who aren't illiterate or ignorant of which i like to think i belong, i feel illiterate and ignorant people have their parents to blame for them being like that.
