As a result of the slave trade, five times as many Africans arrived in the Americas than Europeans. Slaves were needed on plantations and for mines and the majority was shipped to Brazil, the Caribbean, and the Spanish Empire.

Less than 5% travelled to the Northern American States formally held by the British.

The third, and final, leg of the triangular trade involved the return to Europe with the produce from the slave-labour plantations: cotton, sugar, tobacco, molasses and rum.

The majority of Africans (approx. 4M) sold and transported in the slave trade went to Brazil. The next largest group went to the Spanish colonies. Next in terms of percentage were the West Indies (French, British and Dutch). The United States purchased approx 500,000 African slaves. The overall number of slaves naturally increased as that original slave population gave birth and those offspring were born into slavery. In all, over 11M Africans were sold into slavery and taken to varous parts of the world. All true!
