The human brain is very complex and most people are capable of doing multi-tasks. I think that society pressures people into choosing just ONE career field which is why many people bunny hop from one career to the next. Our brains are too complex to choose just ONE occupation. Do you think it's possible that humans are not meant to have just ONE career focus?

It may be to do with the fact there are so many more opportunities these days, so much to choose from that it takes time to find just the right combination for self satisfaction whether or not it is to do with the complexity of our brain is something else. If I as a graduate at law took up my position therein then a few years down the road decided to change, who is going to stop me. Maybe 40 years ago that would have been unheard of but today our lives are limited only by our lack of ambition.

I think that's very possible. I'm in an IT position now, and have been in the financial industry, but am going back to school for psychology. I think there may be some people who find one career that thoroughly satisfies them, or find a job/situation that can satisfy all their needs, and they get comfortable and stay in that job. I see nothing wrong with that, in fact I hope that's what happens with psychology for me (when I'm 33 and just finishing up, I'll be really hoping so). I think a lot of us keep moving and finding new challenges, and others of us, like myself I think, try out different things, and find out what really matters and is best for them. I think that any of the three ways can be healthy, and any of the three can be unhealthy, based on what the motivations are.

If our brains were to "complex" to choose just ONE occupation, how would we ever decide on what we were going to do about anything? A person should take on as many tasks or careers as their own brains complexity, intelligence, and organizational skills allow them to do so comfortably. There is only so much time, energy, and resources to draw upon....why waste it being aimless?

no b/c if humans were just able to choose one occupation then that would be hard to keep from being bord w/ the same job so no i dont think people have to focus on one career.

Many people these days change from one career to another. Of course it's possible to have more than one career.

You're proof of your own statement...

Time was a person not only had one career but also one employer.

Now it's totally acceptable to have MULTIPLE employers in your profession,

Thereby validating the thought that not only is it acceptable for people to have multiple employers but also multiple careers.

ok, time for me to lie down now...
