North Korea uses large military buildup and expenditure to extort and extract aid from other countries, mainly its neighbors like South Korea, Japan and China. The USA is the second largest aid giver to N. Korea behind China.
The last rond of missle launches will buy them time, and give them more leverage when trying to blackmail money, resources, food and technology from neighboring countries who find it cheaper to pay them off than the fight them. Its right out of the mob.

Communism my good chum. If it works, it would form the perfect society. As it is, it is just barbaric governing ensuring just about everybody gets paid the same with huge excess funds for the government. This gets spent on rockets, weapons, stadiums and ridiculously well co-ordinated shows for the leader performed by 8 year old girls.

It doesn't have an economy as such. Its an isolationist state. It dosen't to trade with anybody if it dosen't have to. Thats why when its harvest fail famine follows very quickly.
