Technically, any sort of color to your skin from the sun is considered damage. But I know I can't stand to be out of the sun during summer. I have always heard that you should put on an SPF of at least 30, and reapply every two hours. Just swim around and play games in the sun... if you want a tan, that's how you'll probably get it!!!

With a SPF of 40 you can stay in the sun for 40 minutes without tanning. If you are getting a tan you are not protecting your skin. All the best.

15 spf which basically means you would have to stay in the sun 15 times longer to achieve the tan you would have without protection. If you're wearing sunblock or spf 40 and trying to tan -it won't happen.

SPF (sun protection factor)15 is the official least you could apply without being at risk for sunburn. If you want to get a tan I would suggest playing it safe rather than developing skin cancer by unprotected exposure. SPF 15 should last more than fifteen minute but reapply every few hours or so and you should tan without burning.

I depends on the tone of your skin. Different SPF's work differently on different skin types! You are probably very pale...

Try a lower SPF number like 15... It will still protect you from burning, but allow some sun through so you wil tan a little.

I am German and enjoy my holidays at the French Atlantic coast, Croatian Adria and Romanian Black Sea.

If I want to tan, on my first 3 days of vacation on the seaside I go out without any sun protection after 4pm for about 3 hours.... then I go another 3 days after 3pm for about 4 hours also without any sun protection ..... and then I can afford to go also at noon for 2 hours without any sun protection.

After this first week I have tan enough not to care any more during all the rest of the year about sunburns ... and believe me NO PROVIDER OF SPF STUFF DIDN´T MAKE ANY MONEY OUT OF ME THE LAST 10 YEARS!

Since the ozone layer is thinning, you might not want to go lower with yout SPF protection that SPF 30. My kids and I use that, and we still seem to get burned, so we've gone to an SPF 45.

SPF is pretty much just saying how long you can use it before re-applying. SPF 30 means you need to reapply in 30 minutes.
