It's not rude to ask. If anyone is being rude, it was him for doing that knowing his portion cost more. The way we have always worded it is.......We ask what everyone is getting and then pick out those that food about equals and say well since our meals will be in the same price range we can get them all on the same bill and just split it. That leaves the person ordering steak to either choose the same price range or get his own ticket.

I think you are correct. He was the rude one. If everyone in the party was ordering light lunches so should he. He took advantage of your co-workers. He continued to order high priced meals knowing that no one would ever ask him to throw in the extra cash.

When I lunch with my co-workers, we all pay our share. We do not split the bill evenly because it is not fair. I think someone should stand up and mandate that everyone pay their share or just ask for separate checks before the waiter/waitress takes your orders.

Your co-worker is a boorish freeloader and is taking advantage of people's kind nature. I'd be willing to bet that if the precedent was set that everyone paid for their own meal, he'd become less epicurian in a flash.

Well someone needs a back bone. You have every right to expect him / her to pay for his extra. He knows this and is taking advantage of it. Shame on him. I would not invite him. If he did end up going, I would say seperate bills to the server from there on. It's far from rude...it's more rude of him to take advantage of his friends. Tell your coworker that she needs to wake up and smell the coffee, he's using all of you. Dump him or change him.

Reconsider splitting the bill all in all. It is not fair for anyone to eat salad and pay for someone else to have steak! Let's all pay for our own lunch! :)

To ask in a group setting, yes. Somebody should have pulled him aside to let him know it was not right to order steak and then have everybody help pay for it. That person did not have proper manners.

no way man! I wouldn't pay for him! seriously! I went to dinner one night with my fiance and two friends, and we offered to pay for them thinking that they would order $8 max, the girls boyfriend ordered a friggin ny strip $24 meal! I ended up not eating that night because it was so rude it made me sick and the girl gave me $10 so in the end it was all ok...

No.
If you are over 35 and want to act that way- then everyone just splits the bill. Then- feel good about yourself for not worrying about every little penny and other people's annoying traits.
