I assume you don't play often.. make sure that you're well hydrated. Take breaks. Once you're in better shape, that will clear up. Someone else suggested breathing through your nose - that is probably a good idea too.

Same reason why you sweat. Also, try breathing in through your nose when you run. That way, your mouth doesn't dry up over and over and you have to make more spit.
Phlegm usually deals with having a dry throat as well. Plainly and simply, just get out more often and play more sports that involve running. That way your breathing gets more developed and you're not taking breaks and walking so much cause you're outta breath.

Phlegm is the by-product of your body fighting with bacteria, they are stored in your lung by your body waiting to be expel through your mouth.
Our body is constantly at war with bacteria around us, the reason most of us don't notice it is because our immune system is doing such a good job that you don't have to worry about it to fend off these tiny armies off your body.
However, when you body is not running as efficient due to bad diet, late sleepy schedule, etc. Immune system tend to drop its efficiency and your body isn't responding that fast to bacteria, hence the increase in your phlegm.
Excessive phlegm in your system is an early sign of sickness, its telling you that your body isn't function that well and you need to do something before it turns to something serious.
If you are spitting out phlegm while you're play soccer, that's helpful since exercise helps the body. So keep at it and it should help get rid of it.
Also refrain from fried food, carbonated drink and orange should also help your body recuperate; most of the above mentioned food put stress on your digestive system and cause your body to work overtime after eating them.
Just keep up with exercise/sport and watch your diet, you should see your condition improve.

this answer is somehow realated to the question!
When you run, no 'snot' can come out of your nose. Insted, the fluid comes back down and into your throat which then gives it a shake if you like and then it comes up to the top of your mouth. Usually doctors would reccommend you not to swallow the liquid as the proccess may repeat and you may choak on the fluid

The whole Breathe from your nose instead of your mouth is true, when you breathe from you mouth, you take usual deep breaths, unlike you breath from your nose you take small-medium breaths. About your phlem problem, I would check up with the doctor, you might just have a problem with the amount of Mucus that builds up in your system.

Because you're a mad dog! Snarl and growl when you chase after the ball (while foaming at the mouth), and I bet you intimidate like 75% of the other players.

It's phlegm (one of the few words in the English language that's spelled like it looks) and I don't know why.

It's a natural occurring function for your body to want to spit on your enemy. Thus , when you are competing , you will work up a good saliva clam to lurch at your competition.
