Some less obvious, but more meaningful ways of conserving water for students include using less paper products (manufacturing paper requires 100's of gallons per pound), using less electricity (most power plants use evaporative cooling) and use less alcohol for driving and drinking (about 50 gallons) to manufacture a gallon of ethanol.
Your spending habits along with corresponding public displays of your motive also are more effective than avoiding a shower or drinking all your water at the table. Vegetables from southern California are highly water intensive, corn from about anywhere, as are all of the shopping centers with manicured lawns. etc.
It's easier to see results from personal conservation, but really has a minimal impact on the total water consumption compared to the indirect usage that is caused by our daily activities and purchases.
If your looking for a simple personal idea, many folks put a brick in their toilet tank, which displaces water and reduces the amount used with each flush.
Anyhow, good luck.

Then can conseve water by going to the lake and seeing that millions of gallons of water passes every minute, and realize that they can use as much of it as they want. What they really need to learn is how to conserve air. You should put them in a car on a hot day, and not let them out for a couple of hours.
