I have a portable refrigerated air conditioner , ( it's not as efficient as what it has been but then it hasn't been this hot either : ( ) it's been running all night long and the indoor temp. has dropped by 3 degrees, I've also put a tower fan a few yards away so that it catches the air from the conditioner, just put my feet in a bowl of cold water, bliss, it's stopped them aching. I have another fan here behind my head in my computer room, it doesn't cool the room but at least there's moving air until I can open the curtains and the windows when the sun ' moves' to the front of the house at lunchtime.
An ice pack helps, I put one inside a plastic bag yesterday and placed it on the back of my neck, try it on your tum !
I keep filling my mug with water to drink.
Lukewarm shower.
Cold flannel on face and head.

Keep curtains and blinds drawn during the hottest part of the day I'm like a mole at the moment ! Rooms, once heated take many hours to cool down.

At all costs avoid alcoholic drinks....... I Know its a nightmare, but alcohol dehydrates the body combined with the hot weather your talking melt down. Also drinking hot drinks raises your internal temperature making the outside temperature seem less, which does cause you not to sweat so much but you will also need to drink other fluids to help keep the body hydrated. If you find your getting a headache due to the heat this is your bodies first warning your dehydrated

And come on everyone what is going on there are countries where 35 degrees is winter weather for them so stop moaning, lets be British about this and stiffen that upper lip, slap on the suncream and relax and enjoy the sun :)

drink lots of water. It is the only liquid guaranteed to have any effect.

you can get ice packs which you attach to a fan but a bottle works just as well (fill a large bottle, leaving enough space for it to expand, with water and freeze it then put it in front of the fan)this will cool down the air rather than the fan moving warm air around.

Run your wrists under cold water

regularly wash the back of your neck with a cool flannel or babywipe

you can now get cooling sprays which are quite good. spray them on the back of your neck and the bottom of your feet.

I have a special trick to cool down but I am not sure I can explain it. Basically, you tickle yourself(or get someone else to do it) down the sides, really really gently so it's kind of tingly. Try it wherever you find it works best.

Drinking hot tea does NOT NOT NOT work! It is an old wives tale like waving a red flag in front of a bull. Bulls are colour blind so the colour makes no difference! Tea actually makes you produce more urine so you lose less through sweat making you hotter. Think about it, its like saying when its -2 eat an ice cream and it'll make you warmer.
The reason people say this is because of a long standing british joke that tea solves anything. It actually started out as a joke but some people took it too seriously and really believe that drinking hot tea makes you cooler. doh!

Hi you could try one of those cooling mist sprays, they work when you are by the fan, you might use the whole can though, or you could throw out the fan and get an air cooler and put freezing cold water in it and wack it on full. Or just surround yourself with a fans blowing air at you from all directions

Actually, it DOES work to drink something hot. When you drink for example water and its temperature is lower than 10 degrees it goes throught your body and your organism doesn't see it. Haven't you known that Arabs and other nations that face hotwaves all the time are 'tea-nations' ? So, I proved you that drinking warm tea is good. Now let's move on :) Also it's important not to drink like a litre of water at once, but small portions all day long. And if I recall anything else i'll let you know :)

Close windows and curtains. Keep a bowl of water handy to pop your feet into frequently (those swollen ankles are hell!) and if feeling really hot and unwell, run wrists under cold water tap for as little time as poss - to save water - or again keep a 'plunge bucket' of water handy!

In Continental weather do as the continentals do - stay in at midday and take a siesta!

The odd cup of tea, they say, is a GOOD idea. Apparently it balances the internal and external body temperatures so you feel cooler.

Oh - and finally - don't drag babies and young children round the shops, Mums! No wonder they are grizzly, poor lambs!

When it is really hot in a house the heat builds up in the upper storeys (because heat rises as hot air is lighter than cold air). Therefore if you live in a house, open the loft hatch wide and the hot air will be pushed up to the rafters by cooler air. The air in the bedrooms will therefore cool down, and maybe (just maybe), you will feel that your house is cooler and you will get some sleep at night! Don't forget to open some windows to circulate fresh air through the house.

Obtain several cool box freezer packs, and freeze as directed.
Place one in front of the fan for really cool air. Once this one has been used, pop it back in the freezer and replace it with a fresh one. You can re-use these as many times as you like. Stay Cool !
( You could, by spending a bit more cash, supplemeent this by having ceiling fans fitted, which are, from my experience, really helpfull in cooling the air down

Think of all those poor africans (and others) that are having to put up with 35 degrees without a fan. That's what i'm doing, it puts things in perspective ;-)
