The reason advertisements for watches always show the hands between 10 and 2 is an aesthetic one. It helps showcase the brand name.

It seems to be a fairly recent phenomenon, as a quick web search shows pre 80's ads with the time all over the place, but more recent ones pegged at 10:10 something. My assumption would be that the 10:10 position is an upright V, which advertisers find to illicit the most positive response in the viewers, and still show the watch with it’s hands not all clumped together.

On a regular clock, 10:10 makes a happy face. 7:25 would be a frown. Check it out.
