I have a hard drive from a previous computer, it was the primary hard drive that booted the computer up and everything. How, if at all, will that effect if i want to hook it up to a new computer to get my files off?

Like, will it try and boot windows or anything?
or if i put it in the slave spot will it just automattically reconize it as just another memory source?

Some of the newer IDE cables are cable select, so the dip switch positions may or may not matter.

If the second (old) hard drive is configured as the slave then your PC will not try to boot from it (unless your bios has some whacky config). You sound like you know what you are doing so go ahead and mount it as slave (or on the seconday channel) and boot your new system. Your old HD will show up as a new volume (probabley E: drive).

It may recognize it as another windows boot, but unless it probably won't try to boot off of it. Once you hook it up it should see it right away, if not try installing any drivers that came with it when you got the first computer.

Depends on whether you put it as a primary or secondary-
I recommend secondary then you can just access the files via "my Computer" and transfer them to the c:\

Hard drives have dip-switches and you need to set them to configure it properly. If there isn't a label on it, try the drive manufacturers website.
