Since all the liberals claim there is a seperation of church and state, and want religion removed from the schools, should they have to go to work or school on Christmas? I don't hear them complaining about getting the day off work. Does that make them hypocritical?

australeolive. Yes that does make you a hypocrite.

Well if they're going to take the day off anyway, shouldn't they stop their b*****ng about it?

Christmas is no longer a christian holiday? When did it stop? These politically correct dimwits are the ones that are changing everything. It's not a winter holiday. It's a celebration of the birth of Christ. It's not his birthday. It's a celebration of the fact that he was born.

You people make me sick!!!

rlrose, you're comparing apples to oranges. Yes everyone can still celebrate new years and memorial day etc. If you'd had bothered to read the question you'd realize that what i'm asking is why do the people that complain about the holidays still get to reap the rewards of the holidays. If they are anti-Christmas, they should have to go to work.

Work wouldn't be closed if they went to work.

And NOWHERE in my Constitution does it say ANYTHING about a seperation of church and state. I have no idea what you are talking about.

rlrose. I agree with everything you said. But to me, that's not a seperation of church and state, that's saying that the government won't promote any one religion. I see it as two different things.
And according to your logic, you contradicted yourself. If Christmas was a pagan holiday overtaken by the church, then either way it's a religious holiday of some kind and therefore should not be a federal holiday. And so NOBODY should get the day off.

rlrose: I tried to put up a little question to get people to think. That's all. But obviously you took it personally. Took up half the page with your little rant. And then insulted me. I don't really care, but it's the principle of the thing.
"Christians such as yourself (and a few other posters here) are self-righteous, pompous people who feel their way is the only way."
The truth is, you don't even know me. You don't know what my religious preferences are. You merely assumed my religion.

"I do care that you'd like to force your entire belief system down my throat....."
It appears that you and your "ilk" are trying to push you non-religious ways down everyone elses throat by not letting them worship the way they want. "Take prayer out of school." "You can't have the 10 commandments on the courthouse steps."
You even took the opportunity to answer my question as a chance to further push your beliefs down the throats of others.
I'm sure most people don't care.

I agree that if people don't believe in Christmas then why celebrate? They also have the audasity to call it "xmas" or "Happy Holidays" as they collect their"Christmas bonus" and presents from coworkers. I am sick of it not being called what it is CHRISTMAS. The celebration of our Savior's birth. Living in American I can celebrate Mother's Day etc.. my freedom allows me this. I am getting to the point that if a store goes out of its way to call all it's merchandise that they are profitting from "holiday gifts' I will shop else where. Stores make more than half of all their profit for the year at Christmas. They should thank the christians not insult them. If I were a minority or handicaped in some way no one would think of insulting me. If I am christian then I am automaticly , narrowminded, stupid, arrogant, wrong for my beliefs, the list goes on forever. No one blinks an eye for all the insults. Why do we give gifts? Because the wisemen gave baby Jesus gifts. The whole point of the day is about love. Where is the love " peace on earth'? Who really is the loud , arrogant one? Merry Christmas, Merry Christmas and oh by the way MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!!!!

Many places are closed at Christmas, so those employees would be off anyways. Schools have a 'winter break', it surrounds Christmas because there are many people who celebrate it.

I think everyone is equal, regardless of religion. If the Christians get off work/school for their holidays, so should every other religion. Either that or no one gets holidays off and would have to spend their vacation days to get out of work on a holiday (in the case of students, they'd have to skip).

What you're saying is like saying "Shouldn't black people have to work on holidays". Not only is it discriminatory, it makes little to no sense (depending on your viewpoint). There is no hypocrisy involved, people are allowed to enjoy a day off now and then.

Nope, Christmas is so commercialized now that most people, even devout Christians, don't think about Jesus as much as they do Santa. You still celebrate Halloween don't you? And that was originally a pagan holiday. Who cares, it's not hypocritical, it's a holiday and a time to be with your family and as far as I'm concerned, just because the date was originally associated with Jesus, the same as Halloween was spirits, doesn't mean you have to believe in either to just enjoy a day for its own sake.

I don't know in your country, but in mine (france), christmas is doesn't look like a religious thing anymore, everybody celebrates christmas, and since our culture is a christian based one like in your's I suppossed christmas is a holyday for everybody no matter if they are atheist jews muslims or whatever.

It has nothing to do with seperating the state and the church, that's 2 different thing, you can be atheist, I am, and still celebrate christmas, does that make me an hypocrit???? I really don't think so, since christmas as lost all it's religious meaning. You know the big red guys has nothing religious

Do some homework. Christmas began as a Pagan holiday. Christians merely jumped on.
I love Christmas I don't care how you celebrate it. I love getting together with loved ones and sharing time with friends. Oh and all the pretty lights!
By the way who the heck is going to read your lengthy self righteous novel?

Christmas should not even be a holiday. The christians can take it off, say like the Jews and their holidays. The separation of church and state is real. Check out your facts a more.

Of course Christmas was not a Christian holiday before it was adopted by Christians from earlier winter solstice based celebrations, (as opposed to having any connection about the supposed date of the birth of Christ).

But why let the facts get in the way of your bigotry?

No. Here in Taiwan, I take Chinese New Year off even though I'm not Chinese and don't use the lunar calendar.

It's a national holiday. There are more Christians in the US than atheists so the atheists are going along with the flow. It's just a day off for Christ's sake. (pun intended) =p

shouldn't christians stop calling Easter "Easter".
Easter got it's name from a pagan goddess she once saved a bird with a broken wing from winter by turning it into a bunny, it was a magical bunny though that could lay eggs. but several christians dont know this and think it has something to do with a rabbit named Peter Cottontail, as you can see a holiday can be celebrated without believing in or even knowing anything about its origins.

Sure. And christians should not be allowed to go shopping for the whole month of December since they're supposed to be celebrating the birth of christ, not waiting for santa claus. And christians shouldn't be allowed to make their houses look like a Vegas casino since there was no reference of a decked-out manger in the bible either. And while we're at it, no shopping for new dresses for the largest fashion show of the year; I think they call that one easter... the one where jesus went looking for hidden plastic eggs right before take off. Hypocrisy at its finest.
