I agree with the first answer, but also using a screwdriver to remove the vent first would make it much easier, especially if your hand/arm will not fit into the vent. If the pen is metal you could also try taping a small magnet to a coathanger. If its one of the cheap plastic "Bic" type pens.... why bother? It probably wouldn't hurt anything just staying there.

Try the hardware store. Try to find a Telescopic Magnet, it looks exactly like the antenna on a portable radio (pushes inside itself) but it has a magnet on the end. Used to pick up screws and whatnot that fall behind the work bench. Hope that helps.

You can take a screw driver and the pull the vent from the floor. try to not bend the vent.

That vent should be able to open one way or another. Try pulling up on it or unscrew the screws.
