Fabric softeners should never be used on towels as it makes them less absorbant.

A good windy day can soften towels on the line, but (although I hate to use mine too much), nothing softens up towels like the tumble drier.

Try using less laundry powder/tablets and see if this helps.

Pegging them out just makes them really dry I always find, I usually tumble dry my towels but I also use softener & comfort sheets.

If you don't like using a fabric conditioner try Bold, they have a built in fabric conditioner, you can buy the soap powder in liquid tabs, bottle or normal granules.

Try using a cup of ammonia (do not mix with bleach!!!) when putting in your detergent. It softens and will also take out any musty or moldy smell from towels that have been laying around!! The ammonia smell is completely gone with the rinse.

They have those new Dryer Max Dryer Balls out now. They're blue & spikey. They help cut drying time, are hypoallergenic, reusable & eliminates the need for fabric softener & dryer sheets. The spikes are apparently soft enough that they "massage" the fabric to make it softer. I included a website so you can see them.

Contact Lakeland Products; they do a softening ball which you put in the machine....absolutely wonderful and not an ionic surfectant or pollutant in sight! About £10, but worth every penny as they last forever!

Unfortunately, using fabric softeners make your towels less absorbent, so you are doing the only thing you can to make your towels useful. You just have to buy good quality towels.

You can use a cup of white vinegar by itself and wash the towels. This will get out the excess soap and will also get the musty smell out. Then run the load again with your favorite laundry soap. They will be nice and fluffy !
Hanging them out to dry ALWAYS makes them stiff.

Try Arm & Hammer laundry detergent. I noticed how very soft it made my clothes when I used it. I did not use the kind with fabric softener in it.

Its coz they dry stiff when you leave them out to air dry on there own, when you bring them in stick them in the dryer for a few mins. Unless you have central heating you put them on the radiator from damp to dry then they go lovley and soft.
