I'm not sure if he is the best American writer of all time, but I think he did a great job of capturing the American experience during the gilded age and the industrial revolution. So maybe he is the best American writer of his time.

He's a great author but for my money I'd say Henry Miller is the greatest American writer...

I usually do not read American literature, but I must admit I do like the works of Henry James. "Daisy Miller" is my favorite. "The Turn of the Screw" is the one I would most like to read that I have not done so yet.
