Common scam. Don't ship the computer. If you deposit the check the bank will probably tell you it is OK after a couple of days. Do NOT touch the money. Wait at least a full week then check again as you amy now be told that the check was no good. Banks will OK a check quickly but, when it comes time to actually receive the funds, that can take much longer - especially if it is from a foreign bank.

Take it to a teller at your bank, it may be legitamite, and you may get your 5000, though you should pay the buyer back the difference. If it is a scam, the checkbook from where it came from may have been stolen. If so, alert the person who's name is on the check, the police, and the buyer. You should always get a photo ID like a drivers licence, or a passport, before accepting a check to make sure the address matches-up.

Are they asking you to take $450 and send the balance back to them...or on to someone else? This is VERY typical of scam artists. I would call the bank that the check is written on to see if it is good. Don't count on it.

I think you're right; try calling the bank and hold the check. If it's not - a thumbs up to you!

Man I wish I had $450 right now

That's a pretty common scam. Theives overpay for an item and then ask you to forward the balance to someone else. When their check bounces, you're responsible for the $4550 that you just gave to a stranger.

Put the 5000 in an interest bearing account. Wait and see if the person complains they over paid you or something. Refund the difference. Meanwhile you've earned interest on their 5000.
