There is a common saying in Portugal that says: "To be Portuguese is to be Catholic". According to their National Information, approximately 97% of the population considered itself Roman Catholic. That is one of the highest percentage in Western Europe.
However, as it usually happens in Catholicism everywhere, only about 1/3 of the population attends mass and take the sacraments regularly. Most of them wishes to be baptized and married in the church, though.
I have been in several cities of Portugal, such as Lisbon, Porto, Coimbra, Cascais and Estoril, and there are churches everywhere. Once I had the opportunity to be there while the Holy Week, and they actually take their religion pretty seriously, at least during this time of year. They are very respectful about traditions.

A little bit more than 92% are Roman Catholics. There are many sainthood churches in Portugal and the most famous one is St Fatima's.

We are catholics! There's small groups of other religions (like in every country), maybe 2%. And 3% don't believe in God.
