The distance the football player may run will vary according to his/her position, age level, style of play, and ability.

Studies has been conducted to get a better estimate of the total distance. For instance, from a Danish study, the total distance covered during a match average 10.80 km. It is said that this value is very close to the values found for Swedish soccer players but further from the mean values of 8.7km and 13.5 km reported earlier for English players.

The report also mentioned that the mean distance covered during the first half is 5% greater than the second half of a match. From the same study, the mean distance covered by midfielders was 11.4km, which is significantly further than the distance covered by the defenders (10.1km) and the forwards (10.5km).

These studies is not conclusive and I think it provide a good estimate on the average distance covered.

This article mentions a study that Everton did on the subject back in the 1970s, and I'd guess the numbers would apply to most levels of professional soccer:

Sounds like somewhere between 8 and 10 km per match.

The average is about 7 Miles covered by one player, and a good team captain can usually rack up about a good 8-10 Miles in one game. The referee's possibly get about 3-4 Miles.
