Yeah, it's ridiculous. All you can see on billboards and on the side of buses is breasts and bums, yet when a woman wants to feed her child (arguably the most natural thing a woman can do) she gets dirty looks or is asked to sit in an uncomfortable, unhygienic toilet!
(There was a documentary about this a while ago, and one old guy said HE didn't object, but was worried about pedophiles getting off on it - the fact that is was the grown woman removing clothes, and not the child seemed to pass him by!)

Because in the U.S. it is symbol of sex and will get you at least an "R' rating. While the U.S is advanced in many ways, sex and body parts are not one of them. Men still go ga-ga over a woman's chest, whereas in European cultures, especially where topless bathing is common, it has become old hat. They see that breast feeding, where the a nice bottle is readily available, is totally unnecessary and if you do it is because you are lower class and cannot afford it or that you are perverted in some way.
Personally, I bottle fed my son from day one and would never think of breastfeeding in public precisely for the above reasons.
Will say that after a child reaches a certain age if you haven't broken the from the breast/bottle (by at least the age of three) that there are real issues that need to be addressed unless you are totally destitute.

Saw a woman breast feeding in Central Park this weekend in NYC. don't think they censor it at all, just ask people to be discreet in public.

Because we are unfortunately still a basically misogynistic society.
Many people think that breasts are for sex and decoration, and forget why we really have them.
It's quite sad actually.

over the years breasts have become a symbol of sex. i agree with you completely. they are just breasts. i wish that i could just take off my shirt when it gets hot outside like men do, but of course society would consider that taboo.

Because we are prudes. It is the moral/christian thinking that has done this. Thinking that the exposed body parts would create havoc with our society.
