if a good lawyer can set it up so gay partners can have the same benefits as any married couple, often better if they have assets, why do gay people make such a big deal about a stupid piece of paper.

Sure, there are plenty of smart gay lawyers out there. However, you don't have to be gay to provide legal services to gay people. The problem with your proposal is that many of the laws and constitutional amendments being written have language in them that can nullify any agreement between any two people that creates legal rights similar to those of legally married couples. That, my friend, is something everyone should fear. It infringes upon an individual's right to enter into a contract or other legal arrangement.

it's is not just about the benefits. it is also about being equal. the GLBT community wants everyone to acknowledge the fact that love is love. whether it be between and woman and a man, two men, or two women. they just want to be accepted. if gays and lesbians could marry [everywhere] in america, then people would realize that maybe they were making such a big deal about nothing. that it is OKAY for gays/lesbians to be together, THE WORLD IS NOT GOING TO COME TO AN END!

As far as the transfer of assets they can obtain the same rights as a married couple but why would insurance companies and employers pay the tab for a generally premiscuous group of people if they didn't have to. They save $, so do heteros! Thats the only "discrimination."

Because what married heterosexuals are given by default a gay person might have to hire a lawyer and file a lawsuit for. This stuff isn't free. We ought to treat all marriages the same.

It's not about the "piece of paper", it's more about having their relationships treated as seriously as straight relationships in every way.
