Fashion, like all trends, work in cycles. Although cliched, it is very true. Singapore fashion,I find, has already come out of its growth stage and the spurt will definitely be seen in the next 5 years.
With so many influences from all over the world, Singapore's fashion has seen vast improvements for the past 5 years.
Armed with the knowledge and renewed sense of style and aesthestics, Singaporeans can now accept diverse cultures and styles, without feeling shocked or appalled. Moving on 5 years from now, Singapore will be a potpurri of fashion styles, cultures and designs. And with the fact that Singapore is a multi cultural society, the fashion scene will see a further redefined segment where east-meet-west comes naturally.
In 5 years time, all genre of fashion will enjoy seamless transition. Be it hi end, urban or hi street fashion, Singapore will see a versatile fashion scene where individual style is the essence, and it is not what you wear, but how you wear it. With the maturity in this sense, there will be less 'clones' and more distinctive style, not unlike Japan, Hong Kong and Korea where they are considered the fashion gateway of Asia.
Singapore in the next 5 years will definitely join them in the ranks as Asia's most fashionable countries; and given the fact that those countries have longer histories than Singapore, it will not be a small achievement.

Unfortunately Singapore has always been a follower when it comes to fashion. For example, teens here follow the hairstyle and fashion sense of their Korean, Taiwanese or Japanese idols.
Although the government is encouraging creativity it will take a while before Singaporeans can breakout of their mould and become fashion setters. Striving for the 5Cs and Singapore Dream, unless a new-generation of youngsters strive for another ideal and thinking then will the true Singapore fashion will truly emerge. Five years I think is still relatively short - just look at what has been achieved in the last 5 years! Singaporeans are still systematic i.e. if there were no standards and procedures at work, no assignment will be completed cos they dont know what to do - no lateral or creative thinking. Partly caused by the teaching methods are local schools and prepping of students to become Engineers, Scientist etc... rather than going into creative occupations.
If you look at the teens in Japan, they are extreme and adventurous. When will local teens get to that stage here? Needs acceptance by parents, tolerance by society and government.
In short 5 years still the same, in 10 years probably some noticable breakout - I hope :)

The current Singapore fashion scene is largely influenced by trend-maker countries in fashion such as Japan, Europe. Singapore does not really have its own unique in the fashion arena. It is quite hard to foresee Singapore as a country which is leading the fashion. Hence, in 5 years' time or even in the future, i think Singapore's fashion scene will still continue to be influenced by other countries.

The government supports and promotes Singapore's fashion scene through events such as the Singapore Fashion Festival. Having governmental support is crucial as huge funds could be poured in to enhance and promote the image of Singapore's fashion scene. Since its inception in 2001, the Singapore Fashion Festival has become one of Asia’s key fashion events. Hosting annual fashion festivals on our soil would gather the industry's favourites in Singapore, thereby evolving Singapore into a fashion hub for this region.

I personally feel that over the past few years, there has been a rapidly multi-directional growing shift in the way the fashion scene in Singapore has been heading. Nowadays, we are able to see a fair bit of diversity on our streets, many colours and styles, be it simple or extreme.
I guess people in Singapore adopt and import a fair bit of fashion ideas from the major fashion countries like Japan and Europe and i am proud to say that they do not adopt it wholesale and sorts of have our own Singaporean style of customization. People in Singapore tend to wear what they feel like wearing, even if the mixing and matchings downright turn-off to others.
In the current fast-changing fashion scene in Singapore, i foresee that in 5 years down the road, we would be seeing a fashion scene in Singapore where there would be an increased scene whereby we would play by our own rules, combining function and fashion to satisfy both our needs and image.
My view is that the all so sophisticated, fashionable and so-hip vintage charm would slowly creep back into our fashion scene, a fashion i feel most people have been so bewitched by unknowingly.
Be it a tight-fit pair of 70's drainpipes or a 50's style prom dress, the fashion scene will be filled with a raft of seriously retro gear. It would be a real chance for us to get our hands on the original old school find that's one of a kind (i.e hats, gloves, handbags, shoes, jewellery and clothing) which we or our parents have tucked right at the far end of the closet, having not seen light for decades.

I think there is a uprising sense of awareness among young singaporeans to be creative. I can see that in 5 years time we'll have more local designers and we'll see more of designs that speaks out from the heart and mind of the youth. The age gap for fashion would be slim as the mature adults would most probably be wearing fashion designed by young local designers. This would also fulfil the desire for people to stay young at heart and appearance. The advantage of the goods being made locally would bring down the cost and a larger market could be reached out as a possibility of a lower retail price.

The IRs contain not just casinos, they too aim at pleasing every facet of arriving visitors. Fashion would be a mainstay by then as the biggest fashion houses from Milan to New York would want a share of the fashion pie. Notwithstanding the competition from abroad, local labels like Song + Kelly, Daniel Yam and M)phosis would strive hard to prove their mettle in the local fashion scene. Thus, Singapore's fashion scene would unarguably surpass its current status to meet the demands of the future.

The Singapore fashion has been and will always be a fusion of multi-racial influence with the Chinese fashion being the predominant. Nevertheless, a gradual shift towards liberalization with Western influence is seen as inevitable because of intimate traditional contact and communication with the Western world. Hence, the Singapore fashion scene in 5 years' time will be an extremely unique fusion of the multi-racial shades with the western liberal tones being intertwined tastefully.

Hopefully with all the work the government is doing on creativity will bear fruit in 5 years. So the scene will not be the same as today. More daring, more innovative, a new style that will emerge that others from the rest of the world will recognise as Singaporean.
Relative to the rest of Asia (don't mention the world) we are quite behind simply because we lack daring designers and consumers who experiment with clothes. There is a very strong herd mentality in the fahion scene here. I would really like to see more local designers who sell wearable designs at affordable prices and more stylish consumers in the next 5 years.

5 years would be a bit too far ahead to predict. Fashion is like pop culture, you'll never know what's going to happen because the culture itself is everchanging. Create an eye candy piece that is trendy and people will start to pick up on it because it's in human nature to be attracted to novelty. If it catches on immediately and last, it'll last for a while; if not, it'll just dies off and revives itself again at an appropriate time in the future. To dare to try something is something new by itself.
xX Go Singapore designers! Bare those scissors! Xx
