I've had cats but they didn't stay with me or got driven over. One of them had one kitten left, the others we gave away, and climbed over the fence with the little one in her mouth. She was afraid that we would give the last one, too. Never saw her again.
Another cat became cranky after moving to another neighborhood. And an other cat went back to the old street after I had moved.
Yes, it's easier to take care of a cat than of a dog, especially if you have to work all day.
Now I have a dog, she is nearly one year old now and I like to go for walks or go by bike with her. But you always HAVE to go.
And it's a big difference if you had the dog from a little puppy or when it was older. I took three courses with the dog now and she listens o.k. If you get a dog when it's older it's so much more difficult because you have to get rid of wrong influences from former owners. Otherwise it's easier to bond.

Dogs are a big responsibility and if you're working all day or living in a flat then NO WAY, but they're very loyal and yes they do need walks.
Cats just need to be fed and sometimes cuddled. If you don't mind sharing your bed then fine. And, it doesn't matter if your out all day,but cats need to get out-side too. If you live in a flat, I suggest you get a creature in a cage.
I'd say think about it really hard.

I was going to say dogs, (pugs rock! we have owned two) but then I felt disloyal to our cat who has been with us for 13 years+ HMMM cats are certainly less fuss than a dog but I could never give up my pug... I would never own a different breed dog, I have and dont like it....ultimately the answer is
BOTH!!!! if it is cat + pug

dogs! no offense to cat lovers, but i dont get cats. they're too snobbish and distant for my taste. they would only come to you if they need something. and when they stare at you, yikes -- goosebumps all over.
unlike cats, dogs are just simply sweet (well, they are! unless you train them not to be, or most of those bite-size dogs - i hate those rat dogs!), and they seem happier than cats =D and they're friendlier than cats, that's fo sure. really a man's best friend...
