Does anyone remember the Dr Who film where Peter Cushing played the doctor and was aided admirably by Bernard Cribbins and Roy Castle?
Or the American pilot a few years ago where Joe McGann played the doctor?
I can't remember off hand how many times a Time Lord can regenerate, but I'm sure he's gone past it, adding to my theory that he's not real.

To answer the questions below:

Peter Cushing starred in two Doctor Who movies:
Doctor Who and the Daleks
Daleks' Invasion Earth: 2150 A.D.

Paul Ganon is considered to be the 8th Doctor and the movie is know by us geeks as simply The Doctor Who Movie or 8th doctor movie. Ganon has recorded several audio books as the 8th Doctor and a few books based the his character portrayal have been written so that's why he is considered the 8th Doctor.

Doctors have 13 regenerations. David Tennant, the current doctor is the 10th. (Cushing didn't count)
