How do I explain to a employer that I have a degree that is not directly related to the job, but still has admirable qualities that can applied toward the company? I have a bachelor's of science in zoology and am applying for a billing specialist position. I don't plan on going on to graduate school. I thought that I wanted to pursue it but I found that the career opportunities for zoology are limited and that I wanted to pursue a job that would give me some job security. Any tips?

Showcase the fact that your degree is a BS not a BA, and this being the case the emphasis on your skill set as reflected by your degree is one based in Quantification not Qualification. Your are an estute practitioner of an Objective mindset not a Subjective mindset. So eventhough you didnt count beans in college like you may do as a accounts payable agent you did define,number, and classify your coursework in a maticulous and organized manner with an emphasis on attention to detail. All of which are solid foundational tenants for dealing with corporate billing/collection. Hope you get the job-

My parents owned a preschool for over 10 years and they looked for outgoing individuals that dressed comfortably and weren't about highend fashion. Listen to "i hate dr. phil's" response. She's correct in stating to wear flats and no low cut tops. Dress in slacks, collared shirt and comfortable shoes. And definitely bring materials and ideas you have to teach these kids. As for questions, be prepared to answer questions like: 1. How long have you been teaching? 2. What do you enjoy about teaching? 3. Have you ever successfully potty-trained children? 4. How would you handle an angry parent? 5. How would you handle two kids fighting? 6. If someone other than the parent came to pick up a child what would you do? Those are just a few. I'll answer them for you. 1. This is your opinion. I'm sure you can answer that easily 2. Same with this one. 3. Again, same. 4. Handling an angry parent is difficult only if you've never done so. If the director is available, always tell the parent that they can speak with them. Never get involved, since it's not your place, and it's best handled by upper management. 5. Separate the two and speak to them individually. You probably know the answer to this as well. 6. If someone other than the parent comes, the school usually has a list of names the parents leave in case of an emergency. First contact the director. If they're not there, then call the parent to confirm pickup. I really hope this helped. :) And Good Luck!!

Your time spent attaining a Bachelor of Science degree has taught you how to think.
It has given valuable exercise to that muscle called 'the brain'.
It has given you an awareness and maturity not readily available.
Your goal is to apply your assets to this present employment opportunity.
Highlight as well, that personality plays a large role in retaining employees and you manifest the interpersonal relationships necessary so they won't have to be looking for someone again in 12 months.
If they even hint that they think you are a quitter for not going on to graduate school THANK THEM!
They put you in an elite category.

For sure, the person across the interview desk has re-adjusted their goals from time to time.

Unless the position requires a related degree, I wouldn't worry too much about it. Surprisingly, many employers don't particularly care what your college degree is in, just the fact that you want to college is a positive. Mention any experience you have in the billing specialist area. Also, if you did well in any of your math courses in college, emphasise that. Any business or accountant courses? Mention those. tell your employer that u r willing to learn and let him know the main reason why u dont want to walk in zoology line.

If you dont mind, you can be a management trainee in the company that u wish to work with. If the management knows that u can do the job, they will upgrade u to a permanent staff. Management Trainee duration will be about 3 months or more but trust me, you will be upgraded to an employee if you do well. Discuss with the interviewer.
