I try to take an interest in world affairs but find I often lack background. When Presdient G W Bush said What they need to do is get Syria to get Hizbullah to stop doing this $hit- who is 'They'? and why aren't they trying?

A good question!

Interestingly I think he may have meant the Iranians. Screened by their own hysterical propaganda, our leaders do a lot of business with the Iranians at a diplomatic level. The Iranians are smart operators, a sophisticated people with a lot of history. They know how to run a show and they run Hezbollah.

American and British diplomats talk continuously with their wily Iranian equivalents to do the deals that eventually make the headlines. I think Mr Bush was suggesting to Mr Blair that it was time to ask the Iranians to call off their dogs.

It is a really long complicated battle that has been going on for a really long time. The Israelites are decedents of Abraham and his son Isaac. Abraham was really old and he though he couldn't have kids, so his wife Sara had him knock up her maid. He had a son called Ismael. Ismael is the father of all Muslims and the ancestor of the Pakistani. It goes back a long way and boils down to they both want to live in the same place, but their religions don't get along.

"They" are the actual governments like Lebanon actually controlling their population, and the large majority of the population telling the minority groups like Hezbollah they don't like the hatred Hezbollah is spreading. Just like in the US, if we don't like what people are doing, we stop it. That is what we want the majority of the populations in the world to do. Instead of turning a blind eye to terrorism, go after the terrorists and make them regret the choice.

He means the rest of the world. He is right on this issue but even a broken clock is right twice a day.
