Geez guys, Pre was a great runner, but BEST of all time? Please...not even the best American. I'd say that was Jim Ryan, Steve Scott or Frank Shorter. At least Ryan broke world records and Shorter won a Gold Medal.

The best runners of all time, I'd have to say it's either Hicham El Guerrouj of Morroco, Haile Gebrselassie of Ethiopia or Lasse Viren of Finland. There's one more that you need to consider however and that's the "Flying Finn" Paavo Nurmi. At the 1924 Summer Olympics in Paris, Nurmi won five gold medals for events including the 1500 m and 5000 m (which were held with only an hour between them). He also set multiple World records.

There are so many, all at different distances. Best way to get the answers is to check out track and field events on the internet.

Prefontaine. He had so much more potential, and his life was cut way short.
