I think you are talking about investments that are made thru a broker on structured exchanges, like the NYSE, CBOT, etc.
For such a general question, and since you are just beginning and don't have the terminology yet, you would be better off getting a book at your local library. People often forget about this best-kept secret of knowledge.
Here, you will only get short answers. It would take many pages, or a book-lenght dissertation to answer your question. You require more depth.
Online, try these:

Be sure and try the Trading Simulator at Investopedia.

Enjoy.

This penny stock service has years of proven experience. Ultimately it is the best service for beginners to use https://tr.im/OAepk
You will have to wait between 3 and 10 days to get into the system in most cases. When I signed up it took 8 days. I wished it was faster, but if you can wait a week or two to start earn life changing money than you will have what it takes to make it in this business.

Try bonds?
Also, you can invest in a business, be a partner, try certificate of Deposits, try annuities, but pretty much is better when something is under Exchange Commision eye, so don´t hesitate going for international Stocks from other countries, like pharmaceuticals from Sweden and on.

in the era 1850 to 2009, U.S. shares back 10.2% each year and U.S. genuine property back 5.8% each year. positioned yet differently, the typical abode value $2,000 in 1850 and is well worth $2 hundred,000 in the present day. it is a 100x improve. Over the comparable era, shares better better than 1000x. yet on the different hand, shares are greater volatile than genuine property. solid success! Ron
