Find out what's causing the problem, then fix it. Even if you disconnect the battery, the code is stored in memory and any codes stored will cause an automatic failure of emissions testing, if vehicles are tested in your state. Just because you make the SES/Engine light go away, in OBD-II (Any car manufactured during or after 1996 is OBD-II) computers they're still stored. OBD-I can be reset and cleared by pulling the computer fuses or disconnecting the battery, but the light will still come back if it's a persistant problem.
After the problem is fixed either by yourself, or a mechanic, the computer in the car will need to be hooked up to a Tec-II scanner or similar scanner and reset from there.

You fix it 1st. That engine warning lite is on for a reason. There is a malfunction with the engine or computer component. Ignoring it will make it worse or do more damage. Go to any auto zone auto part store and they will scan the computer on the truck for free and then recomend the repair to correct it. Once the repair is made , you reset the lite with a handheld scanner tool like at auto zone. If you reset it without the repair, it will only reset itself and come back on again.
good luck
