What's the difference between a cotton shirt bought at the Gap and one bought at Fred Segel or Saks Fifth Avenue that they cost hundreds of dollars more at these more upscale stores.

Nothing but the brand name! People are obsessed with showing that they can afford to shop at an expensive place, and the shop owners know it so they run with it!

Just the brand name. Cotton doesn't get any better because you pay hundreds of dollars for it. I think people who spend that on a t-shirt are crazy. I could fill up both my cars for that.

Usually the only difference is the name and the cost. You're paying for the name. If you want to save money on brand-name stuff, see if there's a T.J. Maxx in your area. You can get all kinds of good stuff there at good prices. You just have to take your time when you look, realize you may not be able to get specific items that you might be looking for (it all depends on what they have in stock) and you need to look closely for irregulars/defects.

it's mostly the name

but also it's the quality. shirts bought at upscale stores last much longer than the ones at gap

however, it's only a plain shirt. you might as well go to gap

there is no difference in the actual shirts themselves. you're paying the extra $400 for the name of the shirt.

The label. Sometimes there is no other difference. It may even be the same shirt.
