I have found that any job where you are working directly with the public can be horrible. People are inconsiderate and rude. They are also only interested in their own needs. If you are a waiter, a bank teller, a stock clerk ( I was during college ) no matter how they screw things up, it will be your fault. That is true for the majority of people, but not all. Now, I am a technical manager and treat everyone with due respect. I say due, because not everyone deserves respect. It must be reasonably earned.
When you say a 'mean' boss are you saying a demanding boss who expects performance or are you talking about a manipulative, mean-spirited SOB? If he or she is demanding and you are later rewarded with good pay and benefits, that's fine. You took the job and they need you. But a bad manager can ruin you! Especially one with his or her own agenda. What out for those!

Well, one boss didn't take my wife's medical condition seriously and wouldn't listen to my request to remain home from a 6 week trip that could have easily been postponed while her medication levels stabilized... I was told go, or else. Being fairly new to the military, I went. Well, my wife ended up in the hospital and nearly died. I requested a transfer. My new boss talked with my old boss and so judged me before I even got here. He even gave me a nazi salute once (Though Christian, I have a Jewish last name). The Air Force is downsizing and he recommended I be separated. I complained about his harassment, and my complaint was swept under the rug because he's too high ranking. It's sad. I'd take mean co-workers because at least them, you can easily rise above. A mean boss can keep you down, and ruin an otherwise promising career. Seriously- I had scholarships, was a good worker, and always tried to do the right thing, no matter what... I wanted to serve for 20-30 years and only made it to 3 and some change. A bad boss came along and crushed my dreams of a long career in the military... Probably wouldn't have had one anyway due to health issues- had an office in a moldy basement for about a year. I went running and caughed a hole in my lung and nearly died. Trust me, if leadership wants to, they can hurt you and ignore you when you need help; because to admit there's a problem means someone in leadership is responsible.

Worst I ever had was roof and driveway sealing. Hot work with asphalt 16-18 hour days. I lasted two days.
Never had a 'mean' boss. I've had foolish coworkers, but that was their problem, not mine.

The worst job I ever had was in a meat packing plant. It is cold, there is blood and fat everywhere. The hours were long and hard. I did it after my separation from my now ex-husband because I was desparate.
