Also known as MPEG4 Audio
This is a better compression technology than old MP3.
MP3 compression 1 minute = 1 MB
M4A compression 1 minute = .5 MB - .75 MB (depending on quality settings)
MP4 is also better at reducing artifact noise (strange sounds that are the bi product of sever compression)

Many new portable media players use this technology because you can fit more songs in the same space.
M4A is not an iTunes only format. Many music distibutors are upgrading to this but they use their own extension name to hide the fact that it is an Mpeg4 audio file.

They're audio files that are the format used by iTunes.
