II would run scan disk first so that it scans your hard drive and corrects any errors. If you want to do a full maintenance, do the following in order for the best perfornance:

1) Scan disk
2) Disk cleanup
3) Disk compression (unless you included it with your disk cleanup)
4) Disk defrag

You should always do disk defrag last so that you repair and remove all unnecessary files on your computer first before it starts defragmenting your hard drive. Plus, it could take a few hours to complete it depending on how much memory you have and how many programs you have in your computer. It will organize everything in your hard drive like a filing cabinet.

Do both, scan disk is faster but defrag takes a long time so do a scan disk first.

1. clean disk (gets rid of junk spyware viruses)
2, spyware scan
3. virus scan
4.. scan disk (repairs files folders sometimes defrag won't work if
corrupt files)
5. de-frag
Now most times you can notice the difference in performance.
