I wasn't going to bother to answer this because others have already given good answers, but I wanted to say, "Bravo' to jlf74464. Thank you for responding to those others without blowing your top.
My own opinion, Superman would have a chance of tricking Thor if he used his speed, because Thor is sometimes a little slow on the uptake. I think they are probably equal in strength. Maybe Superman could fry Thor with his heat vision, before Thor could build up a lightning bolt to throw.
Suppose Thor threw his hammer at Superman. Is Superman fast enough to dodge...? Or could Superman get the hammer to chase him, gradually turning so that he was flying back right at Thor? Picture this for a triple-attack: Superman fries Thor with his heat vision, flies at Thor and hits him with all his momentum (a 'move-through' in Champions parlance) and then gets out of the way so the returning hammer hits Thor!
Marvel showed Hyperion (a Superman clone) easily surviving getting clubbed by Thor's hammer, so Superman could survive that, too. If he could keep Thor off balance, so that Thor didn't think to use his supernatural magic, then I think Superman would win. Superman is more clever, and it would ultimately turn into a battle of wits.
(You just DON'T expect subtlety from a guy whose approach to life is hitting things with his big hammer! That's why we don't have "What would THOR do...?" bumper stickers.
If is is Steel the armored character with the sledgehammer, sorry. Thor would squish him like a bug.

Actually, whether you had been talking about the Man of Steel or Steel, I'm still giving it to Thor. In the case of Steel, I figure Thor is more powerful, & even Steel couldn't stand up to his physical might & his magic. As for Superman, he is weak against magic, so one good shot from Mjolnir would clean his clock. Either way, Thor wins.
Oh, & for the people who always say things like "neither because they aren't real people", you realize the people asking these questions could get sick of people wising off, & start reporting each & every one of you every time you say stuff like that? You can be reported for "Not a Question or Answer" & for "Insulting Other Participants" if you proceed to call them stupid or tell them to grow up. Personally, I think this action is immature, & the people who need to grow up aren't the ones with imaginations, but the people who are so insecure they still have to belittle others to make themselves feel better. I hope word spreads, & people get reported for this stuff, because if they are going to criticize people who read comics & watch animation, they need to just stay out of this section.

To think that a mere mortal, no matter how greatly augmented, could stand a chance against a m*therf**king Norse god?! Surely, you jest.
Thor would take him in less than two minutes.
