For your information, English is the one language which have the most complicated spelling rules. This is because English Language is heavily influenced by many other languages such as Latin, French, Spanish, Italian, American Indians, and other languages. From etimology point of view, English was a descendant of germanic language (Anglo and Saxon), but in the middle ages was heavily influenced by Latin.

"Twelve" is a direct count of "how many."
"Twelfth" is a statement of position... "where is it in line?"
