The headbutt was the result of some bad words between them.

Materazzi called him and his mother terrorists and stuff.
Add to that the fact that Zidane was a marked man in the whole game. Whenever he got the ball atleast four italians attacked him.

he was talking abuse for his mother and sister during the whole match...finally zidane got angry and did such a wrong thing..
